As if the fidget spinner craze was not enough to keep us all on our toes this year, media outlets are reporting that slime is the new gooey global craze. Children and teenagers around the world are not only buying pre-made slime, but also making their own, trading it in the playground and even selling it to their peers.
Slime, otherwise known as; putty, splat, goo, dough (the list goes on) has been delighting children around the world since around the mid-seventies. Whether it be squishing the slime into different shapes or making rude noises in the folds of the putty (who hasn’t?!), this gooey goodness is a classic novelty toy.
Slime has been steadily popular for some time but there has been a marked increase in online popularity since the beginning of 2017* with videos such as; how to make your own slime and ‘satisfying to watch’ where the demonstrator simply plays with the slime proving to be a hit with viewers globally. Words being associated with the slime craze include; therapeutic, gross, satisfying, messy, slimy, disturbing, weird, and even unicorn poo!
